Why Does Lithium Help Bipolar Disorder?

1 025 Shikime 103 mijë

There’s no doubt that lithium has a diverse list of uses. But the way that it interacts with our bodies to help treat bipolar disorder is aiding us in better understanding the disorder and potentially developing new drugs to combat it.

"If it's surprising that the same element used in batteries, would be good for the brain" To be sure, lithium is toxic, and bipolar patients who are treated with it are closely monitored thru blood testing...... Please try to remember that we live in a lunatic culture where someone could hear your words, and think of ingesting or injecting their cell phone battery. Taking lithium may be necessary for some....but the use of the word "good" wasn't necessary to convey the point, and created edutainment with risk of harm as it's potential cost.

Lithium carbonate has narrow theraputic and toxic range, and its concentration easily changes according to the body's hydration status. thryoid function test, serum amylase and blood urea & creatinine test have to be performed regularly as lithium is toxic to thyroid, pancreas and also kidneys

I'd really appreciate if you could make a video going over the spectrum of psychotic disorders! (schizophrenia to bipolar - bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective disorder in between) I find it so interesting that these disorders fall somewhere on a spectrum in relation to each other and it's not as black and white as they've been portrayed in mainstream media. There's a lot of overlap in medication and treatment because psychotic disorders affect the brain in similar ways even though there are key differences in each disorder. I've looked for videos and hardly any have covered this topic - the ones that have are just as confusing as the subject itself. I think it would be great to shed some light on a subject that seems so foreign and scary to most people! Thank you.

Because clearly you have it out for Bi-Polar People! I dissent completely, and I seen way to many kids drugged out of their minds growing up because they didn't meet women of your age's standards! Why don't you put your money where your mouth is an go take a whole bunch of Lithium, years worth a day! And see how much that Fries your Brain your Freaken Moron! I have couple of question for people dealing with bipolar disorder if you don't mind answering- When in manic episode, do you get angry or sad ever? And do you remember what you have had an argument about 10 minutes ago? How did you realise that you have a problem? And in depressive state, do you remember things you have said, done? I'm trying to understand because it seems to me that my friend has bipolar, she posts random friends on her ig stories, texted a married guy 400 messages, in the next moment she talks about the guy she is in a relationship with (they are not, they haven't spoken at all), she doesn't sleep, doesn't realise she has a problem. She started yelling at me for telling her that today is monday, because she is convinced it is sunday, it creeped me out. I just want to learn how to talk to her in that situations, and understand the disorder in order to help her, and me, because it started affecting my daily life. I feel scared and think constantly about her.

So old mystery has gone solved at an extent. I figured it out that what it actually was. I was always obssesd with making movies in my mind with many things as like songs, special effects and actions scenes. One day an idea clicked in my mind that why should not i form a charcter. Who can express the imformation in a better way. Because how our mind understand anything. It is actually it's expression towards that thing. It is as like a field express towards an information itself and mould it into an another way. But the field transform itself by different patterns of concepts and information in our minds. Sane here i was expressing these character as like someone is doing a talk show and a teacher is teaching in classroom. And one day i got an idea about how a charcter can a desgined in a thiniking state. So i made them like that. And one day i got an idea to do something even beyond it. I realized that actually i am thinking by my mind but pretend to be an another mind. So why i can not make stories by that minds. So every idea came with a question for next possibility. So i was studying organic chemistry. And after looking at benzene ring i got an another crazy idea. It was an idea for something beyond the thinking mind. I thought that every charcter and mind has an inspiration. Just as like i watched a movie and i got an idea related with it. It can associations and dissociations of many already preexisting ideas. So what equations are going in an unconscious mind. No body can tell actually. So after looking at benzene ring i got an idea of a thinking box. I named it as imagination box. And it was next level of a thinking mind of a charcter. So i imagined something beyond the mind according to my concepts of mind. But it was just an another dimension of creative realm. So i formatted the concept of rotation. That every movement has significance and indication. And when a box rotates then it will indicates some random ideas related to formulated concept about it. And this is how actually our intellegence and conciousness works that way. Because i was expressing the process of idealization and cogintive mechanics into the form of a hypothetical model. Which crosses my already preexisting believes and faith about many things. And i challenged every idea and concept at a complete unique and strange level into the another realm. It is too much like science fiction.

Lithium Carbonate does not cross the blood brain barrier! This is why it is ineffective and why many patients are given 50 to 100 times, a toxic dose, needed to be helpful. Orotic acid is a substance in mothers milk, when bound to this molecule, the supplement is called Lithium Orotate. Dr. john gray found this out and I am shocked that lithium Carbonate is being promoted here.

I’m 45, live in Georgia and since I was 15 I’ve personally experienced various issues that would fall under mental illness. Stranger still is the high number of relatives, both immediate and extended, who developed various issues of mental illness or diseases of the brain. Most people wouldn’t hear that and think anything of it....until I list out just how many relatives are included. It becomes even stranger when I explain how it impacts both my mother and father’s sides of my family. There are only two aspects that are shared across the board for both sides: 1. The high number who either were active duty military or were on bases as civil servants. 2. Everyone either lived in or spent extended periods in one town or rather in about a 30 mile radius of one town. To me the oddity is how/when people started having symptoms. As I said, mine started when I was 15 +/-, but my grandmothers both experienced their issues in the early part of 1990’s. That just happens to be the same general time frame as I was born in 75. I honestly think if I had a crystal ball or time travel machine and could go into the future 50-100 years, I would see that people have since discovered some major issue that sparked so many of these illnesses involving the brain/mind. What that common strand is, I haven’t a clue! I have contacted so many doctors, researchers, biologists, chemists, etc asking if they’re aware of any situation where such a wide spectrum of people would have such varied pathologies of the brain but who lived such different lifestyles. The answer so far as been the same... it doesn’t seem ‘natural’ but they can’t explain it either. The illnesses do go far and wide... Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Benign brain tumors, GBM (brain cancer), Oligodendroglioma (brain cancer), strokes, aneurysm, bipolar disorder, major depression, substance abuse -alcohol, substance abuse - street drugs, substance abuse - prescription medications, insomnia, hallucinations (audible and visual), seizures, seizures, seizures. Anxiety disorders. My relatives have taken part in three large trial treatments: The medication Temodar for brain cancer; the medication RU486 for brain tumors (it’s otherwise known as abortion pill), and the GammaKnife trials again for brain tumors. As for the lithium, the video caught my attention because I will explain to people in a very sarcastic (albeit honest) manner that I think I’ve been on damn near every medication possible for mental illness with the exception of lithium, and I just have a fundamental issue being turned into a living, human version of the Energizer Bunny!! But I’ve had such horrible experiences with the medications I won’t chance Lithium. SSRIs, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, anti anxiety, tranquilizers. It was ridiculous! And the only one that ever had a positive impact was the SSRI Celexa (citalopram) when I was a teenager. They weaned me off, issues came back and when they started it again, it was the beginning of a 20 year nightmare! It’s hard enough to fight the demons that come with mental illness, but when the suffering is increased exponentially because of the “treatment”, it’s a recipe for disaster! Maybe as they learn more about these drugs it will give them a reverse view onto the root cause of these illnesses and diseases!

It works by lowering dopamine and glutamate and it increases GABA and serotonin. it also up regulates Tkrb the Brain-derived neurotrophic factor(Bdnf) receptor commonly called miracle gro for the brain. It also increase the amount of neurons in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and amygdala. It also reduces oxidative stress commonly thought to be a trigger of mania. It inhibits glycogen synthase kinase Lithium is neuroprotective, it lowers thyroid function, it protects against mitochondrial dysfunction, it decrease lipid peroxidation levels, it enhances cyclic adenosine monophosphate. Is an amazing element for the brain and body I disagree with the doses used in BPD though.

Lithium (from Greek: λίθος, romanized: lithos, lit. 'stone') is a chemical element with the symbol Li and atomic number 3. It is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. Under standard conditions, it is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable, and must be stored in mineral oil. When cut, it exhibits a metallic luster, but moist air corrodes it quickly to a dull silvery gray, then black tarnish. It never occurs freely in nature, but only in (usually ionic) compounds, such as pegmatitic minerals, which were once the main source of lithium. Due to its solubility as an ion, it is present in ocean water and is commonly obtained from brines. Lithium metal is isolated electrolytically from a mixture of lithium chloride and potassium chloride.

Lithium was disastrous for my husband”s bipolar disorder. It almost ruined our lives. NO ONE should ever be on that poison.

@Henk - Yeah, but 80% of them get a lifelong, very uncomfortable condition called hypothyroidism, but no one mentions it ever... Some force you to take it and shame you for resisting, while others say it's poison.

people react different to drugs. I'm sorry it was so disastrous for you and your family. But that doesn't mean it doesn't work for other people.

If you'll ever meet toxicity problems with lithium, try lithium orotate. Lamictal didn't work for me, then I remembered I saw a video where a guy said he used some supplies to treat BP, so I researched, read Amazon reviews and tried. Completely removed any depression or hypimania

I've been on lithium and many other medications for ten years since my last, and hopefully final, hospitalization, and I've never felt better.

Didn't mention about the rotting your teeth. It helps but I would have rather had ECT over taking Lithium and the 8 other psych meds prescribed for me.

@0:51 "over the next 70 years, this compound, which we'll just call "lithium" from now on, " @1:30 "so having a drug like lithium is incredibly important" 1: describing lithium as a drug is an extremely poor description. 2: having wasted words explaining that you are going to use the word "lithium" instead of saying "lithium carbonate" is an extremely poor excuse for making the subsequent misstatements; it would have been better to just say "lithium carbonate" 3: even describing lithium carbonate as a drug is wierd; that's like describing ordinary table salt as a drug
