The golden ratio. Some say it’s the most mythical number in the universe. Others say it underlies everything from nature’s patterns to beauty in art and design. But, like, what is it? And does the myth of the golden ratio hold up to its mathematical reality? Let’s find out

@ffggddss I said digital numbers. there's a difference between digital and analog. I could write 1.33333333333 etc forever, or I could write 1/3. Pi or any other irrational number could be written in a way that humans aren't writing it in. So it seems "magical" or "mystical" to some people.

So you explained why the plant leaf turns cant be an rational number, but you didnt say why 1/Φ is better than 1/π or 1/e, which I think it would have been good to address.

My guess for why 1/Φ is best is because Φ is the number which is the least well approximated by rationals, meaning that it stays the furthest from overlapping on each turn

I believe that phi is one of the signatures that God put into the universe. It is okay that it doesn't show up everywhere it is claimed be shown up, but at least there is some truth to the myth. Besides God doesn't have to sign everything He creates for it to be something He created, nor does He have to use the same exact signature every single time either. God is weird like that. God designed us to be attracted to things that He likes. We find the things that God likes to be beautiful and phi is one of the things He likes, so He put it in a lot of spots. I mean it isn't literally everywhere, but it is in a lot of spots. That's not by coincidence, that is by design -- God's design. I liked this video.

Isn’t it odd that we have so many infinite decimal place numbers representing real physical world finite ratios? It’s because we use a numbering system of base 10. Probably because we have 10 fingers and used our fingers as the original way to tally up quantities. Base ten is really quite arbitrary. Isn’t it, in a cosmic sense?

I'm not a math person and I've never heard of Phi, but this guy apparently illustrated how plants and nature follow the Phi concept. He is taking an abstract mathematical calculation and applying it to a living thing that is subject to its surroundings and genetics. Living things are not perfect. The concept of Phi is "perfect". It is a calculation. The end result of that calculation will always be Phi. The growth of a pineapple or someone's nose will never be perfect because there is no "perfection" in nature, only attempts at some basic structure. Nothing in nature can ever follow the rules of Phi exactly because that's not how nature works. Apparently, all of the plants this guy was demonstrating were nature's attempts to achieve Phi. I use the Rule of Thirds when taking photos. It works. If I use the golden ratio setting in my camera and use that instead, it "looks" better. Since this video, I've poked around the golden ratio and it appears that it has been used, or at least observed, for thousands of years. This video convinces me that it isn't some random number. Somehow, the Nautilus shell is attempting to reach Phi. I think that is amazing.

I think they should have referenced Aronofsky's movie Pi, it plays with the human pursuit in seeking patterns whether they're present or not, a neurotic mathematician is convinced there are universal mathematical patterns underlying every facet of nature and reality, from the weather to the stock market, and he believes it's a quantifiable string of numbers that can be conceived, but his pursuit drives him to the brink of madness, and it's unclear that what he finds had any significance at all or was just all in his head

Music theory is almost entirely based on intervals of 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 whether we're talking about chromatic scales or diatonic scales. All of those numbers fall onto diatonic chord tones if the root is 1. Not only that, but to divide between two octaves by those numbers can't be taken for granted. It's not arbitrary, the harmonics within every note contain other notes that use 12 tone intervals (13 is the octave. ) For example, the root is going to contain very rich and loud harmonics of the 5th. It's only the fifth though when you have a major scale (8 notes including the octave) in place in which it's the fifth note, and in the chromatic scale (13 notes including the octave) it's the 8th note.
